New York / Seoul

N.E.E.D. Architecture was established in 2007 after over 15 years of collaboration between two partners; Sangmok Kim and Sungwoo Kim. Internationally acclaimed through their winning entry for Emerging New York Architects Award in 2008, the practice operates in NYC and Seoul with special emphasis in mid-range architecture and interior. It is a unique range of projects which requires expertise of realizing large projects as well as flexibility of managing a small office. It slips in the gray zone where neither small nor large practice can perform.

The boundary of middle ground provides the office better adaptability to move towards both ends of project spectrum; crucial trait in practice to expand and sustain.

Sangmok Kim, AIA LEED BD+C

Sangmok Kim brings in the expertise of landscape and urban design to the practice. Breeding a new brand of architecture as actuator of landscape has been his most ardent pursuit since his years with Diana Balmori, FASLA.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Seoul National University and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University with Honor Award for Design Excellence.

Sungwoo Kim, KIRA SBA NL

Sungwoo Kim's experience with large scale civic projects in Seoul plays a vital role in running the practice in Korea. He frequently teaches at Seoul National University and Korean National University of Arts with advanced design studios on old urban blocks of central Seoul.

He holds a Bachelor/Master of Science in Architecture from Seoul National University and a Master of Architecture from Berlage Institute. He is an appointed Public Architect of Seoul Metropolitan Government.
